Jefferson Cup – Brushed Pewter

Brushed Pewter Jefferson Cup

I spin this Jefferson cup from a solid pewter disc onto a wooden mandrel that I cut on my lathe. The pewter will follow any shape the wooden block (mandrel) features. By simply changing the shape of the wooden form (mandrel) the metal takes on a different positive shape. I can metal spin cups, jiggers, goblets and martini type drink ware from pewter by simply cutting a new form. The pewter I use is an alloy of tin, antimony and copper, does not contain lead, and is food safe. This cup is great for use in the bath or bar. Use it when brushing your teeth or drinking your favorite wine or spirits.

  • Features:
  • Approximately Eight Fluid Ounce
  • Spun From .062 Solid Pewter
  • Weight of Cup Approx. 5 to 5.4 Oz.
  • Lightly brushed.

While my design mimics the Jefferson cup, it is not identical to it. Also, there are slight variations in height due the fact that they are hand made and not machine made. One really cool feature of this is the fact that when you look within the highlights inside the jigger you can see that the maple grain pattern was transferred from the mandrel to the pewter during the spinning operation. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this Jefferson cup. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Upon reaching his destination at the top of a mountain hike the Jefferson cup would appear in celebration of the achievement with a little Peach Schnapps. His hiking companions would see this and all wanted a Jefferson cup as well.

Those who have heard of Jefferson cups sometimes believe Thomas Jefferson was a metal spinner. He was not. The story goes…Someone bequeathed to him a set of silver cups in which he did not find the design very pleasing.  So he sketched out a rough design and hired a local silver smith to melt down the cups and spin his new design. These were the cups he then drank from and they became known as the Jefferson cup.

While my design mimics the Jefferson cup, it is not identical to it. I enjoy spinning these cups that feature roughly an 8 oz. fluid measure. They feel solid in the hand with a weight measure of about 5 to 5 1/2 oz.
