10″ & 12″ Artistic Pepper / Saltmill Set – Cherry Burl with Salt & Peppercorn Inlay

This is my high-end salt and pepper mill set for which I spare no time or expense so that I can achieve what I simply call delightful! These are truly one-of-a-kind mills cut from Pennsylvania Cherry that I harvested from Promised Land State Park.

We hang two dimensional art on our walls, display three dimensional art on pedestals yet our dining room tables seem bare. It’s time for functional art to appear center stage in our living areas and to appreciate the form along with the function.

I create these mills from burls that have lots of character. I first cut the burl, while leaving bark inclusions intact in specific locations. Bark inclusions are typically seen as defects. These defects are my playground and fit my criteria for inlaying. I remove this bark, leaving the voids for inlaying with organic material like peppercorns and non-ferrous metals like copper.  Then I meticulously place each peppercorn at the correct depth so that when the excess pepper is cut away the largest diameter of the corn remains as part of the finished surface. I overlay with copper to fill the cavities between the peppercorns as well as fill the small natural pockets found within the corns. I also inlay the salt mill with a faux salt to mimic the crystalline structure of a coarse sea salt.

Filling:

Filling these mills is simple. By removing the top knob, the cap slips off giving you access to a large reservoir for storing the peppercorns or coarse salt. Use these the salt mills for a coarse flavorful salt like sea salt or kosher salt. Do not use table salt. I recommend Cherry Smoked Sea Salt. It’s my favorite. It has a slight hint of smoke flavor and makes corn-on-the-cob, tomatoes, mashed potatoes etc. sing,  “AHHHHH!”

This design is the first style of mill I designed over 20 years ago and have since streamlined the shape into a sensuous, soft form that is also ergonomically pleasing for use in your hands. By continuously turning the top cap clockwise a steady stream of ground pepper or salt, to your liking, will fall crisply onto all of your favorite dishes. The top nut adjusts pepper and salt from a fine to medium coarse grind.

I have several traditional mills in my own kitchen for grinding different spices. One year I grew my own cayenne pepper and crushed it into flakes using a food processor. It was HOT! When I ran out of my own stock I purchased some McCormick’s crushed red pepper. It paled in heat value. I tried an experiment by placing some of this store-bought crushed red pepper into one of my traditional peppermills and voila…the HEAT was increased exponentially! The moral…if you want full bodied flavor from dried spices…GRIND! To maintain the beautiful high gloss finish on this mill set I recommend an automotive style paste wax with carnauba. The wax not only cleans but protects. Priced as a set. Guaranteed for life. (That would be my lifetime!)
