Votive Candlesticks – Cherry Burl & Copper

These candlesticks have an elegant presence on the dining room table during any special occasion. I design and make the entire candlestick. I spin the hardware – candle cup and base – from copper. The stem of the candlestick is made from cherry burl, a native wood I harvested locally at Promised Land State Park. Trees with burl were scheduled to be cut down by the Park Service, so I was invited to take part in the harvest. Unfortunately, it was because of a high mortality rate of trees with burl.

Standard votive candles fit neatly in the copper spun candle cup. The candle cup starts out as a round flat disc and changes shape while I metal spin it on my lathe.

I taught myself metal spinning, (along with the help of great metal spinning authors like Paul Wiley, Terry Tynan and a great metal spinning demonstrator: Peter Lovallo) because I was not pleased with the candle hardware that was available to woodturners.

Metal spinning is exhilarating! It’s the process of forming metal over a mandrel (the wooden form) while the metal disc spins on the lathe. I apply a blunt steel tool called a combination tool against the spinning metal and along with just the right amount of pressure and leverage the metal seamlessly flows over the wooden form that I designed and turned. I spin pewter and copper for my hardware and while spinning it, it feels like a gelatinous, fluid material similar to that of clay on a potters wheel.  It’s intoxicating to be able to control and place this fluid-like metal onto a form I cut and design.  Metal spinning adds another unique element to my work and I can truly call it my own.

I have also authored a DVD on Metal spinning titled: Making Candlesticks Seeing the Curves to teach others the basics of metal spinning along with good design principles. You can see me metal spin these candle cups on the trailer of my DVD:  Making Candlesticks
