This antique-style peppermill mechanism is a wonderful working handmade peppermill. It makes for great conversation around the dinner table. It features cast metal working parts with bronzed housing. Peppermill size: 3″ x 3″ x 8″ tall. This peppermill has one of the best range of grinds in any peppermill mechanism I have assembled. See additional photos of fine to coarse grind and everything in between.  The peppermill grinder is fully adjustable from fine to coarse with the top flat nut.

What is spalted Maple?

I harvest and repurpose this spalted maple wood locally, saving it from the landfill or being burned. I chose to feature this great piece of maple because of the contrasting dark spalted lines that are typical of decaying wood.  Decaying… you say?  Yes! It’s sort of like bleu cheese. If it’s harvested at the right time it’s perfection. If it’s harvest too late, it’s punky and useless.  Once I finish the piece, the decay process ceases, but the dark zone-lines remain which adds to the character. These dark spalt-lines are natural and cannot be repeated the same way twice. This makes the piece truly unique. Spalting enhances the three-dimensionality by wrapping the spalt lines around the form. Spalting also requires more work in stabilizing the wood and thus it costs a bit more than some of the other native wood I use.

I personally guarantee your satisfaction with this peppermill. To maintain the beautiful high gloss finish on this mill I recommend an automotive-style paste wax with carnauba.  The wax not only cleans but protects. (Please note: This antique style peppermill should not be used to grind salt.) The peppermill you see in the photo is the peppermill you will receive.
