Nothing says beginner, novice or professional like your finish. With the Brilliant Finishes for Woodturners DVD, you’ll gain the confidence and knowledge to finish your turnings with a sensuous, supple, smooth finish that begs to be touched. What better way to learn a finishing technique than to look over one’s shoulder and, in a way, learn one-on-one. It would be impossible to get up-close and learn these techniques in a classroom situation like a demo or symposium. Whether you employ some or all of the suggestions found on this DVD, you will enhance the overall look and feel of your work by following these techniques. Your finishes will look less labored-over, feel more sensuous and appear soft and fluid because ultimately the finish and consistent texture will determine whether the creator of the piece was a beginner, novice or a pro. Brilliant DVD!

From the Brilliant Finishes DVD it is easy to see that many
processes and considerable due care are required to get close to the correct
results. Anyone thinking of short cuts will need to pay better attention to Ted’s
    comprehensive tuition.

Some things stand out right away and one needs to concentrate on
them thoroughly. There’s the need to look carefully, between processes, and assess
what it actually happening to the wood. This may be a learning curve for those
starting off but experience should teach such things before too long. There is
also the need to fill blemishes, in this case, using CA glue – it is essential
not to miss out this stage since a ‘spotless’ appearance simply cannot be
    achieved otherwise.

The spinning speed is also an issue so new lathe purchasers
would do well to acquire a variable speed lathe that reduces the RPM rate to a
notably slow pace. Depending on the shape of the piece (the mill example shown in the first part of
the DVD) one also needs different types of scraping chisels, an acquisition that
becomes necessary or else one cannot properly access the cove. Getting the
necessary array of tools is most important.

Ted’s guidance on sandpaper usage is hugely relevant. Avoid the
cheap and largely useless papers. The use of Klingspor abrasives for example is
very sound advice since it is so important to acquire cloth-backed papers that
are of high quality and can easily be folded to the correct shapes. For the
private user it is advised to check out Ebay for such a product since the
company itself will only sell to professional traders in large quantities. There
is no shortage of Klingspor abrasives from these secondary suppliers.

Finally, the acquisition of a suitable buffing wheel is most important
since completed glass-like finishes can only be fully achieved after using such
a device. The ‘magic’ referred to
appears like Byzantine silk following the use of carnauba wax polished to a
lustrous sheen with the correct use of the all-cotton buffing wheel.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ted Sokolowski’s Brilliant
Finishes DVD is the number one educational video for woodworkers (worldwide)
and is second to none when it comes to the mirror-like surfaces that most users
will be extremely keen to apply to their competently turned work pieces.
